Hier volgt een bericht met terugwerkende kracht die aansluit op het recente bezoek van de scholen hier in Ladakh:
In februari 2011 heeft stichting Create een bezoek gebracht aan het Sarah Institute in Dharamsala. Dharamsala is de stad waar de Tibetaanse regering in ballingschap is gevestigd en is daardoor een belangrijke politieke, religieuze en culturele plek geworden voor de Tibetaanse gemeenschap. Het Sarah Institute is een soort Tibetaanse Universiteit met diverse programma´s. De Tibetaanse cultuur ligt dicht bij de Ladakhi cultuur en vandaar dat de samenwerking met het Sarah Instituut een belangrijke waarde heeft voor de ondersteuning van de Ladakhi teachers. In Ladakh zelf zijn er vooralsnog geen mogelijkheden zijn voor teacher training programma´s. Het programma van het Sarah Institute sluit goed aan bij de filosofie van Create.
Willemien: Toen ik in het Sarah Instituut aankwam ontmoette ik 13 vrouwen die heel enthousiast waren omdat ze de kans hebben gekregen om in drie maanden tijdens hun winterstop te studeren in Dharamsala. De lessen, het verblijf, de docenten, maakten dat iedereen met grote waardering over deze drie maanden verteld. In het begin was het niet zo gemakkelijk. Voor de meeste vrouwen was het de eerste keer dat ze zolang weg waren van hun thuissituatie en uit gesprekken bleek dat alle vrouwen toch de volledige support hadden van hun familie. Variërend in ervaring in het onderwijs tussen 3 maanden en 15 jaar zijn de teachers voor deze cursus vrouwen tussen 23 en 45 jaar, waarvan er 6 getrouwd zijn en 2 of 3 kinderen hebben. Er was ook een boeddhistische non in de groep. Voor alle teachers werd de reis naar Dharamsala betaald door de scholen waar de vrouwen werken als teacher. De scholen en de teachers hebben een overeenkomst ondertekend waarin ze o.a. bevestigen dat ze minimaal 3 jaar participeren in het werk van stichting Create.
De dag startte elke dag om 8 uur in de ochtend met een programma dat doorloopt tot s avonds half 8. Hoewel de Ladakhi taal en Tibetaanse taal dicht bij elkaar liggen was er toch een communicatie probleem omdat de meeste lessen in het Tibetaans gegeven worden. Dit werd opgevangen door de lessen in het Engels te geven en er werden extra lessen Tibetaans toegevoegd.
Als belangrijkste benoemden de teachers in het programma van Sarah Institute, het child centered education programma, dat aansluit op het programma van de zomercursussen in het Wilad House in Likir. Verder is er veel waardering voor het Sparke programma. Sparke staat voor Supporting Positive Alternatives for Raising Kindness in Education. Dit richt zich op bewustwording over de negatieve effecten van het fysiek en mentaal straffen van kinderen op school.
We hopen dat er een nauwe samenwerking tussen stichting Create en het Sarah Instituut gaat ontstaan zodat in de woorden van Geshe la en Mr Passang Tsering van het Sarah Institute: "het onderwijs in de Himalaya regio een flinke boost kan krijgen".
Afgelopen week hebben we 9 scholen bezocht als follow-up op de wintercursus in Dharamsala en de zomercursus in Likir. We hebben vooral de leraren geobserveerd die hebben deelgenomen aan het programma in Dharamsala. We zijn erg goed en open ontvangen door de scholen en de leraren. Na afloop hebben we ruim de tijd genomen om samen met de leraren en de principal (rector) van gedachte te wisselen. Er ontstondenvaak interessante gesprekken over de methodieken die bruikbaar zijn binnen het bestaande systeem om het onderwijs te verbeteren. Opvallend is dat als grote verandering na de cursussen benoemd wordt dat met meer plezier en motivatie les wordt gegeven. Ook de uitwisseling die ontstaan is tussen de 13 leraren van de verschillende scholen wordt als positief ervaren.
Door dat we zoveel scholen hebben kunnen bezoeken hebben we gezien dat er grote verschillen zijn tussen de scholen wat betreft faciliteiten, maar ook wat betreft het niveau van onderwijs. De ervaringen en gesprekken die we hebben opgedaan tijdens deze observaties leveren een belangrijke bijdrage aan de komende zomercursussen om deze nog beter af te stemmen op de wensen en behoeften van de Ladakhi scholen.

This is a message based on a earlier visit in Dharamsala in February 2011. This is related to the recent visits of the schools here in Ladakh:
In February 2011 the Create Foundation visited the Sarah Institute in Dharamsala. The Tibetan government in exile is based in Dharamsala and it is therefore an important political, religious and cultural place for the Tibetan community. The Sarah Institute is kind of Tibetan University with several programs. The Tibetan culture is closely related with the Ladakhi culture, making the cooperation with the Sarah Institute important in order to support the Ladakhi teachers. In the Ladakh region are currently no possibilities for teacher training programs. The program which the Sarah Institute offers matches well with the philosophy of the Create Foundation.
Willemien: When I arrived at the Sarah Institute I met 13 very enthusiastic women because they had the chance to study in Dharamsala during their winter break. They were very positive about the courses, the accommodation and the teachers. They highly appreciated the 3 months stay at the Institute although it was not easy for them in the beginning. For most women this was the first time to stay away from home for such a long time. During several conversations I learned that nevertheless the teachers had the full support of their family.
The participating women have different backgrounds with ages varying from 23 up to 45 years. Some have teaching experience from 3 months up to 15 years, some are married and some have 2 or 3 children. There was also a Buddhist nun in the group. The travel costs of the teachers to Dharamsala were paid by the schools where the teachers work. The schools and the teachers have signed an agreement where is stated that they participate for at least 3 years in the work of the Create Foundation.
Each day they started at 8 o´clock in the morning with a program till 19:30 in the evening. Despite the fact that the Ladakhi language is close to the Tibetan language there were still communication problems since most lessons were taught in Tibetan. This problem was solved by giving the lessons in English and by providing extra classes in Tibetan.
The teachers described the child centered education program as the most important of the Sarah program. The child centered education program is also used and taught during the summer courses in the Wilad House in Likir. There was also appreciation for the SPARKE program. SPARKE stand for Supporting Positive Alternatives for Raising Kindness in Education. It aims to create awareness about the negative effects of mental and physical punishment of their pupils.
We hope that there will also be a close cooperation in the future between the Create Foundation and the Sarah Institute in order to "boost the education in the Himalayan region " according to Geshe-la and Mr Passang Tsering of the Sarah Institute.
Last week we visited 9 schools as a follow-up to the winter course Dharamsala and the summer course in Likir. We observed the teachers who participated in the Dharamsala program. The schools and the teachers received us in a very openly and welcoming manner. After the observations we took time to talk with teachers and the principal about their experiences. We had valuable and interesting conservations about the implementation of new teaching methodologies in the existing education system. The schools mentioned that the teacher now teach with much more joy and motivation then before. Also the exchange and meeting between teachers of other schools from the region were highly valued.
Because we have had the opportunity to visit many schools we have seen that there are great differences regarding the facilities and the level of education between the schools. The experience and conversations we have had during the observations were very important to provide a good summer course in Likir. We use this experience to even better fine tune and adjust to the needs and wishes of the Ladakhi schools.
