Workshopweek 1

Op maandag 18 juli kwamen de teachers van de eerste workshopweek aan in het Wilad House. Alle 21 teachers stapten om 10 uur uit de afgehuurde gele schoolbus om het team van 4 trainers en het ondersteunend personeel van het Wilad House te ontmoeten. We gaven de groep teachers eerst maar eens de tijd om hun nieuwe verblijfplaats te verkennen. Zo rond 12 uur begonnen we met een introductie van de trainers en het programma van de week. Dit jaar zijn er naast Willemien nog 3 andere trainers. Dr Lou Farley is een trainer uit de Verenigde Staten en is gespecialiseerd in sociale ontwikkelingspsychologie en heeft ruime ervaring in lesgeven en werken met jonge kinderen met emotionele problemen. Hij is ook verbonden aan het Sarah Institute in Dharamsala waar hij gastcolleges verzorgt.

Dorjee Gyaltsen is een leraar van het Sarah Institute in Dharamsala. Hij is gespecialiseerd in het SPARKE programma wat staat voor Supporting Positive Alternatives for Raising Kindness in Education. Dit richt zich op bewustwording over de negatieve effecten van het fysiek en mentaal straffen van kinderen op school. Als Tibetaan kan hij deze belangrijke boodschap beter aansnijden omdat hij vanuit zijn boeddhistische cultuur veel dichter bij de Ladakhi´s en de Tibetanen staat.

Bas Bouwman is een trainer uit Brussel gespecialiseerd in het aanleren van taal. Alle scholen gebruiken het Engels als mediumtaal wat inhoudt dat bijna alle vakken in het Engels gegeven worden. Het goed aanleren van het Engels is erg belangrijk voor de kinderen die al op jonge leeftijd naast hun eigen taal, het Ladakhi, ook nog het Hindi moeten leren. In de workshopweek hebben we de leraren aangeleerd hoe je een kind een taal aanleert en welke activiteiten je kunt doen. De methode richt zich op het stimuleren van de 5 zintuigen en het spelenderwijs opbouwen van woordenschat en grammaticastructuren op een creatieve interactieve manier.

Willemien Frencken heeft zich op observatie en ontwikkelingspsychologie gericht en ervoor gezorgd dat het team en de hele groep op een goede manier met elkaar samenwerkten. Iedere morgen zijn we gestart met een evaluatie van de vorige dag rond de thema’s MIND, BODY, FEELINGS en PEER Social Behaviour.
De teachers van deze workshop waren heel divers in achtergrond,ervaring en werksituatie.Doordat we in een team van 4 trainers werken zijn we in staat om op verschillende niveaus en vanuit verschillende achtergrond te werken waardoor er voor iedere teacher voldoende nieuws te leren valt. Vigotsky theorie, SPARKE, Child Centered leren, teambuilding activiteiten, dans, zang, tekenen en yoga wisselen elkaar af. Hierdoor ontstaat er een creatieve en actieve sfeer waarin de teachers zich steeds actiever gaan opstellen.

In het weekend hebben we op uitnodiging van Create 10 principals (rectoren) ontvangen voor een meeting in het Wilad house. Het gesprek was vooral gericht vanuit de vraag welke toekomstvisie en wensen de principals zagen in het ondersteunende werk van Create. Het werd duidelijk uit deze twee dagen dat de behoefte aan workshops en trainingen voor teachers zeer groot is. Doordat de private schools onderling niet georganiseerd zijn was dit een unieke kans voor de principals om elkaar te ontmoeten om te komen tot een eerste stap van samenwerking.

The teachers of the first workshop week arrived at the Wilad House on the 18th of July. Around 10 am all 21 teachers stepped out of the yellow school bus to meet the team of 4 trainers and the staff of the Wilad House. First the teacher had some time to get used to their new home for the coming 5 days. At 12 am we started with the introduction of the trainers and the programme of the week. This year there are 3 other trainers besides Willemien.
Dr Lou Farley is a trainer from the United States specialised in social development psychology. He has extensive experience in teaching and works with children having emotional disabilities. He is associated at the Sarah Institute in Dharamsala where he provides guest lectures.

Dorjee Gyaltsen is a teacher at the Sarah Institute in Dharamsala. He is specialised in the SPARKE programme which stands for Supporting Positive Alternatives for Raising Kindness in Education. It aims to create awareness of the negative effects of mental and corporal punishment of children at school. As a Tibetan he can better raise this issue because his Buddhist cultural background is much closer to the Ladakhi’s and Tibetans.

Bas Bouwman is a trainer from Brussels and is specialised in language teaching. All schools use English as a medium language. Nearly all subjects are taught in English. Learning English properly is therefore very important for the children. Besides English they also need to learn their own mother tongue Ladakhi and Hindi. During the workshop week we taught the teacher how to teach a new language to a child and what activities they can do. The method focuses on the stimulation of the 5 senses in language learning and how to build up new vocabulary and grammatical structures in a playful and creative way.

Willemien Frencken treated the subjects of observation and development psychology and made sure that the team and the whole group cooperated in a good way creating the right atmosphere. Every morning we started with an evaluation of the previous day discussing the themes MIND, BODY, FEELING and PEER Social Behaviour.
The teachers of this workshop were very diverse in background, experience and work situation. Because of the wide range of experience and background of the trainers we were capable of adapting to different levels to make sure that every teacher could learn new skills and knowledge.
Vigotsky theory, SPARKE, Child Centered learning, teambuilding activities, dance, singing, drawing and yoga were incorporated in the programme. Because of the different activities a good atmosphere was created where the teacher felt more and more comfortable and became more active.

During the weekend the Create Foundation invited and received 10 principals from different private schools at the Wilad House. The meeting discussed how the principal see the future of the Create Foundation and in what way they see Create providing support. They made clear that there still is a great need for training and workshop sessions. Private schools are not organised in a way that they regularly meet each other. This was a unique opportunity for the principals to meet each other and to take the first step to further cooperation.
